What are IOLs?
The artificial lens used to replace the eye’s clouded natural lens is the heart and soul of a successful cataract treatment. Known as an intraocular lens (IOL), these implanted lenses restore vision lost to cataracts, and in some circumstances allow the patient to see clearly without the need for glasses.
IOLs have come a long way since first conceived in the mid-20th Century. Over the last couple of decades advances in IOL technology have accelerated to the point that not only can they restore lost vision, but could also make it better than ever.
Today, most IOLs come in one of two major categories.
- Monofocal IOLs were among the first artificial lenses developed, and can be found in its most basic form, the standard IOL. These lenses have a single point of focus that can be tuned to a specific range of distance, usually far. Individuals will notice more clarity at a distance, but may still require corrective lenses (especially for up close viewing). Some monofocal lenses may also contain added elements that improve overall visual acuity.
- Multifocal IOLs, as the name implies, have more than one point of focus to accommodate a greater range of distances. Multifocal lenses may also contain elements like EDOF (extended depth of focus), which widens the distance field and reduces the occurrence of gaps when moving the focus from one distance to another.
With the exception of the standard lens, both monofocal and multifocal lenses can also include a component known as Toric that corrects for astigmatism. This condition involves an abnormal shape of the curve of the eye, which requires additional accommodation to achieve corrected vision. A Toric lens helps ensure that a patient with astigmatism has the same opportunity for clear vision after cataract surgery as those without the condition.
What are my choices for an IOL?
Hattiesburg Eye Clinic strives to offer a wide range of IOL choices to match an individual patient’s health, lifestyle, and financial situation. We currently offer 4 types of intraocular lenses for cataract patients. Other than the standard IOL, all our lenses can include a Toric component to correct for astigmatism.
The Tecnis Standard IOL
The Tecnis Standard IOL is our basic monofocal lens that corrects primarily for distance vision. Patients who receive this lens will notice clearer vision at a distance, but may still require corrective lenses for seeing up close. It’s not an effective lens, however, if you have astigmatism. The Standard IOL is typically covered by insurance.
The TECNIS Eyhance™ IOL
This breakthrough monofocal TECNIS Eyhance™ IOL extends depth of focus for better intermediate vision in addition to far. Patients with the TECNIS Eyhance™ thus can enjoy clearer sight at various ranges of distance, but may still require glasses for reading or other activities involving near vision.
The TECNIS Symfony® IOL
The TECNIS Symfony® is a multifocal, extended depth of focus (EDOF) lens that potentially corrects for near, intermediate (a computer screen, for example), and far vision. As with our other premier lenses, the Symfony® can also contain a Toric component to correct astigmatism. Many patients who receive the Symfony® report better vision now than when they were younger. Our surgeons were among the first in the nation to offer this lens to their patients in South Mississippi.
The TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL
For optimal results, Hattiesburg Eye Clinic offers the TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL. This new multifocal lens includes a number of innovative technologies (including EDOF) that increase the chances of sharper vision at all distances, and a smoother transition when moving the focus from one distance to another. Hattiesburg Eye Clinic was the first provider in Hattiesburg region to offer this lens to cataract patients.
