Faster, More Complete Vision Diagnoses with Optomap® Ultra-Wide Digital Retinal Imaging
Retinal imaging has been used for many years by eye care providers to detect vision problems. That approach has taken a giant leap forward with the Optomap® Ultra-Wide Digital Retinal Imaging by Optos®, a complete digital system that combines the power of lasers with state-of-the-art computer technology. Hattiesburg Eye Clinic is pleased to be the first provider in this area to offer this latest advance in fast and comprehensive vision diagnostics.
The retina, a thin layer of cells that covers 65% of the eye’s back surface, converts light received by the eye into impulses that it transmits to the optic nerve, which in turn relays to the brain for sight. Because it contains a rich network of nerves and blood vessels, the retina can accurately reflect the health of the eye, providing evidence of defects or diseases that impair vision.
Traditional retinal imaging methods only capture about 30% of the retina for viewing at one time, much like what the narrow beam from a flashlight might reveal in a darkened room. Optomap® increases that view to over 80% for a fuller view of the retina. This in turn increases the speed and opportunity for viewing abnormalities in the retinal tissue.
Undergoing an Optomap® scanning procedure is quick and painless. Its camera uses two color lasers to scan the entire retina in a quarter of a second. The system then immediately combines the laser scans into a high resolution image that can be viewed on a computer monitor right in the exam room.
Our physicians can quickly study the image and give immediate feedback to patients during their exam. With Optomap® it’s possible to detect macular degeneration , glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment and other vision problems.
Because the eye may also hold clues to the presence of health issues elsewhere in the body, retinal imaging could reveal other problems related to a patient’s overall health. It’s possible with Optomap® imaging to discern signs of high blood pressure, blood vessel blockages, diabetes or even cancer.
The physicians and staff of Hattiesburg Eye Clinic are excited about the new level of speed and accuracy the Optomap® Ultra-Wide Digital Retinal Imaging can bring in assessing your eye and vision health.
